Investigation Launched After Tragic Accident at Festival Axe Ceremonia

The prosecutor of Mexico City, Bertha Alcalde Luján, announced that an investigation is being conducted into four companies related to the accident that resulted in the death of two journalists at the Axe Ceremonia Festival, in the Bicentennial Park of the capital. The accident occurred on April 12 when a decorative structure fell on photographers Miguel Ángel Rojas Hernández and Citlalli Berenice Giler Rivera.

Alcalde Luján mentioned that more than 35 interviews and over 20 expert assessments have been carried out in various areas such as industrial safety, medicine, forensics, and chemistry as part of the investigation. She pointed out that four major companies are being investigated, although their names were not revealed. One of the companies was in charge of the Civil Protection plan and its supervision, as well as the subcontractor responsible for this work.

As for the remaining companies, one is the park's concessionaire that presented the plan to the Miguel Hidalgo mayor's office, and the third is responsible for organizing the event and setting up the structure involved in the accident. The last company being investigated is the subcontractor for the installation of the specific cranes that caused the tragic incident.

Alcalde highlighted that she has been in communication with the families of the victims and is working closely with them to determine the actions to be taken in this case. The concession of the Bicentennial Park was granted to the company Operadora de Proyectos de Entretenimiento NLP in 2018 during the administration of Enrique Peña Nieto. The ‘Axe Ceremonia’ festival has been held annually in the Mexican capital since 2013, attracting about 100,000 attendees over two days of performances.
